Why vetting matters more than volume in freelance marketplaces

Most freelance marketplaces optimize for one number: how many profiles they can list. More profiles means more search results, more categories filled, and a bigger number on the homepage. But volume and quality pull in opposite directions — and clients feel the gap the moment they start reviewing proposals.
The cost of unfiltered supply
When anyone can create a profile, clients absorb the cost of filtering. A brief that should take an afternoon to fill turns into a week of screening calls, portfolio reviews, and trial tasks — work that a marketplace should be doing on the client’s behalf, not outsourcing back to them.
We measured this directly during our beta: clients using an unvetted, self-serve directory spent an average of 11 hours screening candidates before making a hire. Clients matched through a manually reviewed pool spent under two.
What manual vetting actually checks
Our review process isn’t a resume scan. Every applicant completes a live skills interview with someone who has done the job themselves, walks through three portfolio pieces in depth, and passes reference checks with at least two past clients. Fewer than one in three applicants make it through.
Smaller pool, better outcomes
A curated pool of 2,400 experts sounds small next to marketplaces claiming hundreds of thousands. But every one of those 2,400 has been vetted by a human who does the work. That’s the trade we’d make every time — and, based on our repeat-hire rate of 98%, it’s the trade our clients want too.
